A list of the footnotes in the order they appear:

Mozzies: mosquitoes

Volkhv: Gender-neutral word for a priest/priestess of Spiritism, the primary religion of the Pentagonal Dominion

Shroomhound: A breed of domesticated dog that hosts fungi. The Wintershade variety features blue and purple fur and mushrooms.

Deep Sea: the Demon Lord of Despair who possesses the ocean. Colloquially, the waves are his fingers.

Pitayas: Dragonfruits

Bright açaí: A sky-blue açaí berry, much more tart than the dark açaí berries on Earth

Steena: Mangosteens

Dominion shell: Sand dollars

Wynnles: Leonine and tigrine sapient species. All members, including women and children, grow manes.

Purplefin: Pentagonal Dominionist fish that lives in tropical waters.

Shinigami: Servants of the Death God, Sawyer. Shinigami are ghosts from the afterlife, and cannot be seen or heard.

Sawdust: a euphemism derived from Sawyer’s name. Shinigami erase bodies from existence; not even dust is left behind.

Mud and sludge: Pentagonal Dominionist expletive, equivalent to ‘shit.’ They do not defecate and have no concept of excrement.

Godblood: The descendant of a God, down to three generations.

Ateli: A workshop, derived from ‘atelier.’

Cinnadyme: Bark of an enchanted tree related to cinnamon. It smells like cinnamon and the scent repels insects, particularly mozzies (mosquitoes).

Lemontine: Magical plant that produces lemons and absorbs moisture.

Snowbark resin: A substance from a tree known for its preservative qualities.

Lagodores: Species of sapient people who resemble rabbits.

Domovoi: An underground-dwelling species of sapient people who resemble slugs. They do not have ‘normal’ eyes, and cannot go blind by looking at crystalights. Singular: Domovoi. Plural/adjective: Domovye

Megawhale: A very large, long-lived whale

Yosoe: A species of sapient people resembling goats.

Crazy sugar: Cocaine

Fleur: Language of the Flora, resembling a mixture of French and English

Ebon: A language resembling French

Orochigo: A language resembling Japanese

Cosmo: One of the planes of the Pentagonal Dominion comprised of many small countries and a few colonies of the two large nations, Aloutia and Ophidia.

Clearblood blushing/silvering: Non-magical people in the Pentagonal Dominion have clear blood, and when they blush, their cheeks turn a silvery glow.

Ophidia: The Women’s Republic of Ophidia, a plane and planet in the Pentagonal Dominion where women have enslaved all non-women.

Pili-Palas: Butterflies

Quill-hold: A device that allows quadrupedal people to hold a pen or pencil. Most are quite rudimentary in design.

Gwenynen: A bee. Plural: gwenyn

Daga: A sapient species of people resembling gigantic turtles. Many will ferry people, for a fee.

Kamen: A mask that covers the whole face, worn in many urban parts of Aloutia, but less common in rural communities and small villages.

Ebonwood: A tree related to Terran ebony, but which also has black bark and leaves.

Coatl: A gigantic, feathered serpent native to the jungles of the Mu, on Cosmo.

Mantodea: A sapient species of people who can ‘read’ genetics. They are hired by Life churches (nurseries) to report a child’s biological parents and any other pertinent genetic information the parents should know.

Collembola mucus: The mucus of a Collembola, a sapient species, can be used as glue.

Maxima: The maximum amount of money a person can earn in a given time period. The system was implemented after the Greed Wars.

Troika: Three-player strategy board game similar to chess, meant to symbolize the three-way cold war between Aloutia, Ophidia, and the Makai.

St. Alice’s Lights: Pentagonal Dominionist name for glow worms, named after a human woman whose Terran home had been near a glow worm cave.

Nio: Neon blue. Nio’s name comes from this word, though she is not actually nio-blue.

Somniel’s influence: Aloutian poetic way to describe sleep. Somniel is the Demigoddess of Sleep.

Lek: City on the opposite side of planet Aloutia from Steena Village. (Could hear a gwenynen buzzing in Lek): An idiomatic expression stating that a person’s senses should be spectacular.

Susi: An animal like a wild boar, known for its massive tusks. It is against Spiritism to domesticate them, as they will become near-sapient (and thus ineligible to be eaten) if they become pigs.

Poltergeists: A species of sapienti people. They have historically been unfairly maligned as thieves due to their ability to become invisible and incorporeal.

Summershade shroomwolf: A fungal wolf with orange, red, and yellow fur.

Rainyday Flower: A tropical flower of the Pentagonal Dominion that opens its petals during rain

Aloutian red: Burgundy

Loosejaw shark: A goblin shark

Entomothy: The God of Life

Ten Selachi One Soul: Idiom about resource scarcity. The Selachi are a species of sapient people resembling sharks. Each of their eggs is produced with numerous babies, but only one (usually) will live after eating the others. That one will acquire a soul.

Bolotnik: Poisonous frog, some growing as large as thirty feet tall

Oko: Aquatic animal resembling jellyfish, but with a meaty interior around a ring of vertebrae.

Kyamo: Culinary and medicinal herb, magically enchanted with Lightning elementrons. It’s considered an important ingredient in Lightning elemental diets.

Dye Rivers: Several rivers at the Twenty Thousand Rivers transformation circle, where water becomes a different liquid. In their case, many different colors of dye.

Shortfur Monoceros: A unicorn

Cosmonite lizard: General term for animals known on Terra as dinosaurs

Longman: a brachiosaur

Reza: A tyrannosaurus rex, which in the Pentagonal Dominion is a large, flightless scavenger bird.

Lalafina: Bright, multicolored flower

Sound, Force, Light, or Darkness: four elements commonly seen in sapienti people, but no God of those elements has apotheosized yet. Certain Gods of the Decatheon serve as temporary patrons for those without a God.

Snakescale: salak, snake fruit

Ringslight: Light from Aloutia’s planetary rings

Nue: A large, bipedal, predatory mammal found only in the Mu jungle.

Cotza: Desert-dwelling bovines, farmed for their meat and milk.

Eros, pragma, storge, and agape: four of the eight forms of love in Spiritist philosophy

Vicuña and fungermine: Two animals renowned for their luxurious, soft fur coats.

Eversun Hills: The top of the hand of Cosmo’s Starsine planet. A sun hovers above it, never setting.

Usekh: A broad collar and necklace, intricately made. In the Pentagonal Dominion, they are associated with Lucognidus.

Female Familial Rot: A disease that may occur in women and girls after incestuous vaginal intercourse involving semen.

V-sign: A hand gesture in which a V is made with the fingers. Meant to symbolize Demon Lord Vinoc. The gesture is rude, meant to imply one hopes the other person is tortured by Lord Vinoc, the Lord of Terror.

Amni water: a nutrient-rich soup that can be absorbed by eggs. Ingredients vary based on the needs of the species of the baby in the egg, but most Aloutian mixtures include some kind of milk.

Silphium: a contraceptive.

Coleopterans: One of the 88 species of sapienti people. They are usually bipedal and resemble various types of beetles, usually ladybugs.

Shinkou Sueba: Ophidian military police, rangers, and slave drivers

One’s flower: Aloutian way of saying ‘sexual orientation.’

Gladiolus: A straight man.

Lirist: A sadist, named after Lira, sadistic daughter of the founder of Ophidia.

Rafa: Champagne.

Ulega’s ass: An ulega is an ice-based shrew-like animal. The idiomatic phrase “ulega’s ass” is the Pentagonal Dominionist equivalent of a “rat’s ass” i.e. “I don’t give an ulega’s ass” = “I don’t give a rat’s ass/I don’t care.”

Lagushka: Pentagonal Dominionist name for frogs and toads, generally. A Slevan word that came to be used in English and other languages due to a religious story.

Mutton slugs: Euphemism of the swear phrase ‘mud and sludge.’

Various Monoceroses: scale, shortfur, longfur, roughhide, wooly, and aquatic. Respectively, a centrosaur (one-horned dinosaur), unicorn, almiraj (rabbit), rhinoceros, xiezhi (sheep) and narwhal.

Lassi: A yoghurt-based drink

Viemeno: One of the 88 sapienti species. They resemble foxes.

Lomi: A soup of a pork-like meat, noodles, and vegetables. Considered a comfort food by many in Monoceros.

Angel’s lips: A flower that exchanges carbon dioxide with oxygen at the same rate as a person who breathes into it. Permits people to breathe in enclosed spaces or with poor ventilation.
