Demis and Drinkers
Demis include Demigods and Demigoddesses. They are people who died and went to Spiritua, drank the blood of their God, and trained to use magical abilities. They have been given a title, making them the Demi ‘of’ something. They often cater to small groups of people and hear/answer prayers involving their topic.
Drinkers are people who consume a God’s blood. These include mortals who a God has taken a particular interest in, and the deceased souls currently in training to become Demis. Gods choose mortals to become drinkers for any reason. Flamboil made Kielle Kuchinashi and Rayne Jarkra (two generals on opposing armies) into drinkers because she hoped to watch them duel one day. Sawyer will often choose drinkers if he and his wife fail to produce a child during a year-long interval every ten years because he likes to keep the mortal worlds populated with Death elemental magic users who are ten years apart. Machenerate has chosen drinkers for reasons as arbitrary as the person saved a cat.
All Demis are drinkers, or at least were at some point and are sustaining themselves on the blood they’ve consumed already. However, not all drinkers are Demis.
This is an unexhaustive list of Demis. There are truly hundreds, perhaps thousands, but only a handful are brought up throughout the books.
